Man in the Mirror PROJECT - OZ The Great and Powerful

Welcome to 2014 and the beginning of the rest of your life.  Today you have a fresh start.  You can forget everything that has happened in the past.  You no longer have to think of all the things that have gone wrong in your life.  You can even forget who you have thought yourself to be. 2014 brings with it a new creative energy and now you get an opportunity to create the life you want.

Sometimes that's even scarier than believing we have been placed in a position in life that has not been of our choosing.  What would you do?  How would you live your days?  And what would your days look like?

For a moment today take some time to think about what it would be like if you had no boundaries, nothing that held you back.  Your financial situation was not an issue, your color, your race, your gender, or the country you live in no longer hinders you.  What would your life look like?

If you're like most people that I've talked to, you might start down the road of something like winning the lottery.  "Well I'd have a few houses.  Mansions.  Big ones, with cars and boats.  I'd live in an exotic place and play all the time."  Yet when we put ourselves there, very often that life gets old very quickly.  True happiness in life doesn't come from things.  Most often it comes from having a sense of purpose and feeling loved.

Changing our thoughts about what we can do in our lives is the first step in removing self imposed limitations.  We should always look at ourselves as a work in process, not a finished masterpiece.  Lord too much of that thinking and we'll never live up to our own expectations and continue to disappoint and be hard on ourselves forever.  How can we ever change our lives if we don't accept that there will be moments that will be unknown; moments that surprise us; and moments that set us back?

One thing that both Mr Mandela and Michael Jackson have shared with me personally is that we must step one step at a time.  For some of us, like me, I want Rome to be built now and have to be continually reminded about how Rome was built.  The masters have contended and practically beaten it into my head that there must be "constancy".  You must be consistent in your efforts if you are serious about achieving your goal.  Mr Mandela could have quit many times.  Michael could have stopped making music because he didn't reach his goal with Bad and Elizabeth could have stopped films because the industry told her she was getting too old for pictures.  Yet none of them stopped.  Not one person stopped that has made profound differences in the world.  Imagine your potential for making changes just in your own personal life?

Some key points to remember are:

  • To focus on your goal, not the obstacles to your goal.  i.e. If you are trying to lose weight your focus should be on the goal weight not how much you have to lose.
  • Focus your mind in the now.  What choice can I make in this moment to get me further to my goal?  Is it to stop eating, write a resume, or go for a walk to calm yourself?
  • What are the thoughts your mind tells you about your goal?  Listen then ask if they are true.
  • What are your thoughts telling you about you?  Listen then know they are just thoughts.  Not necessarily the truth.
Above all we must remember we are infinitely powerful beings.  We must choose to use our power wisely.  When I begin to think I can't do something, I think of someone who's courage I have admired.  Recently it's been Nelson Mandela.  So when the going gets tough and I find myself slipping back into a pity party I say aloud in my best African accent "Nelson Mandela!".  Knowing he spent a majority of his life behind bars just to get equal rights in his country puts me right back on track.  If he can do that, I can probably get through my stuff today.

So pick an inspiring person, let them help give you your strength and remember to choose to use your power wisely.  We all know what happened in the movie Oz the Great and Powerful.  One of the witches who was good at heart in the end chose another path.  Her choosing the lesser path led to her own self demise.  We too have that power.  We can choose to self sabotage ourselves and our lives or choose to change them into something transforming and miraculous.  It is only in the moments that we do the choosing and only in our constancy, our consistent efforts that we see true change.

Like the wizard in the movie, our beliefs in ourselves may be small, but our potential is always Great and Powerful.
